About Me

Lauri & Rainbow in NorwayHello, my name is Lauri Thieson, Owner/Trainer of PAWsitive Destiny Training Academy. I live on 80 acres in Sturgeon County, Alberta, Canada (just north of Edmonton) with my husband, 3 horses, 2 German Shepherd dogs (Ringo & Cleo) and a bengal cat named Chili.

I started training horses and cats many years ago and found that these furry friends developed a special bond with someone willing to listen to them and teach them on their terms. I especially enjoyed training my first Bengal Cat (Taz) tricks. He was amazing and knew roll over, sit, jump up, down, high five, gimme five and also did a high jump.

RingoI stumbled upon the world of Dog Training when the dog we adopted with the farm passed away. I then found an 18 month old German Shepherd who had been trained to be a police dog, but wouldn't bite, so he was sent back to the breeder. Ringo's previous training didn't suit his new farm life, so I hired trainers to help me learn how to re-train him for his new life. Ringo and I proceeded to take lessons in Tracking, Agility and Rally-O and he taught me many good lessons that I put in my training toolbox.

CleopatraWhen I was taking the ABC course, part of the curriculum is to take a rescue dog that you have never met through a 6 week Basic Manners class. They handed me a young black female German Shepherd who was rescued from euthanazia by PAWS For Life Rescue and still in need of a home. Little did I know then that she would become my dog, and my teacher, for many years to come. Here's a link to read more of Cleo's story.

I graduated from the Animal Behaviour College (ABC) as an ABC Certified Dog trainer (ABCDT) in Jan. 2010 and have continued to expand my learning and experience through seminars, courses and teaching experience ever since. I hold memberships with the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers (CAPPDT) and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). I am currently working towards an APDT CPDT-KA designation through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). I became a Mentor/Trainer for the Animal Behaviour College in 2012 and now offer the ABC Dog Trainer "Boot Camp". I recently completed the "Feline Management and Training" certificate program through ABC's Alumni Continuing Education program and am very excited to start helping people help their cats to be 'good citizens' in their homes.

I have been very lucky to have the opportunity to train under some wonderful trainer/mentors with extensive experience in dog training and behaviour, as well as CDBC - Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and CPDT-KA - Certified Professional Dog Trainer designations. I have explored the dog sports of Tracking, Scent Work, Agility and Rally-O. I have also served on the board, and now volunteer as a web designer, with the rescue organization "Providing Animials With Safety (PAWS) for Life Foundation".

I believe that if you learn to understand how to communicate with your dog, training will be a positive, fun, rewarding and successful journey for both you and your dog.Lauri & friends
